Tonight for dinner I undertook a second attempt at Rouladen. This time I used slightly thicker steaks and pounded them with a glass coke bottle. It was great fun pounding on the steak rounds.
Eventually I’d like to get some cotton twine to tie them up, toothpicks work OK, but it makes it more difficult to roll them around.
I browned them individually with the simmering onions, and then boiled/simmered them for about 45 minutes.
Although they still did not live up to Oma’s Amazing Rouladen (which she’s been making for YEARS, this is just my second try), they were MUCH better than my first attempt. Flavorful, more moist, and decidedly better. Gavin ate two (he was “really hungry”).
There is still lots of room for improvement, but these were edible (massive improvement), so I’m going to keep trying until I get it right.
