cookies & coffee cake

With Gavin off to work, Heidi safely arrived at Freshman Steve’s, and several loads of laundry done, I decided to do some baking.

Today’s culinary adventures brought me to the forefront of recipe slight-modification. Up first I made Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies w/ Reese’s Pieces with a recipe I found in the LJ community Bake Bake Bake.

I didn’t have whole wheat flour or oat bran, so I used more regular flour and extra oat meal. I also added an extra 1/2 cup of chocolate chips.

My cookies didn’t turn out quite as nice-looking as the ones in the photos (I didn’t make them into little perfect balls before I mashed them gently), but they taste fantastic.

I also made Orange-Glazed Coffee Cake. This was another recipe from Mom’s card-stock recipe collection, from the Great American Home Baking collection.

After the dough had risen, the recipe insisted the dough needed to be divided into three segments, rolled out and braided. This took a few tries, the dough was sticky and uncooperative, but in the end I managed to make some sort of rounded braided.

In the end, the picture on the recipe card looks better than my version, but I’m getting used to that. I haven’t tried it yet, but it smells fantastic, sweetly orangey. We will probably have this for breakfast tomorrow. I wonder how long it will keep for.
