Back to Work

Now that Patrick has made his big arrival I’ve had quite a few people ask me when I’m “going back to work.”

I’ve taken to telling them I didn’t get maternity leave, and went back to work later on Tuesday, shortly after P’s arrival. Infants don’t give time off, and toddlers are demanding taskmasters as well. I don’t get nights, or weekends, federal holidays, I’m on-call 24-7.

I was a little irked that the hospital paperwork listed my occupation as “unemployed.” The IRS recognizes the classification of “homemaker” and while I’m not out building houses, I work for two adorable little boys. Thankfully, I have a very understanding husband – he recognizes that being Oliver’s “MUM!” (P doesn’t have a term for me yet) is a full-time job even before laundry, general housekeeping, errands, play dates and activities.

While I am not going to haul out the “professional” business-casual wardrobe I temped around Boston in, I am hoping to get back into my pre-pregnancy jeans again so my wardrobe options triple, and I can dispose of my maternity yoga pants.
